He is the Key Man (Job 12)
September 03, 2025
I call to God and he answers me; a just and blameless man is a laughingstock. (Job 12:4, ESV)
This chapter is Job’s reply to Zophar. Verses 1–12 are full of irony: Job points out that what his friends say, he also knows well. Yet they mock him. They neither understand nor sympathize, but still judge. Why should right and wrong be so confused? Why should such incredible words come out of their mouths? Job warns them not to comfort with vain words. There is one whose rash words are like sword thrusts, but the tongue of the wise brings healing. (Proverbs 12:18, ESV)
Too many words often bring error. Sometimes it is better to keep silent, to be a quiet companion, to feel with the suffering one, and to pray for him.
In his hand is the life of every living thing and the breath of all mankind. (Job 12:10, ESV)
Job speaks of God’s wisdom, unfathomable and beyond man’s control. He alone rules all creation. Every life is made by him, every gift of wisdom or strength comes from him. And he is free to take back what he has given. People often say, “Man proposes, God disposes.” This echoes the truth of Job 12:10 and Job 8:5–7. However small or weak we are, if we seek God, call upon him, and keep ourselves pure, he will surely guide us to live a victorious life.Even the least soldier can win a great battle. The strongest walls, like Jericho, will fall by God’s will. Whoever we are—man or woman, young or old—if we are willing to spread the gospel, we too can be like the worker bee, sowing seeds of good news. But if we do not trust and commit, even the smallest task will end in vain. Think: in our studies, work, and daily life, do we bring our requests to God in prayer, trusting that his work will be done? When the outcome is not as we hoped, do we complain against God, thinking he has not answered our prayer?
This year I sat for the teaching examination. I longed to be appointed as a formal teacher. Yet the result was far from my hope. I failed by only three or four points. My heart was heavy, my spirit unwilling. I thought: I had worked so hard in preparation, attended services often, taken part in many church works, even set aside social media and sports. Why then was I not chosen, not even entering the second stage? Truly, I could not accept it. But my mother comforted me, saying, God has his good purpose in every arrangement. And in these past two weeks, I saw his hand. In school, I was released from one administrative duty, and in church, I was entrusted with the Elementary 2 teacher leader in Religious Education. Then I understood more deeply: serving God is our duty, never a bargain. We must not think of service as exchange for reward.
With God are wisdom and might; he has counsel and understanding. (Job 12:13, ESV)
Though Job suffered much, and though his friends gave him sharp words instead of comfort, still he confessed God’s wisdom and power. So must we learn: in all things, God has his good plan. We may not understand at the time, but he is the Creator and our loving Father. He does not lay upon us a burden too heavy to bear. If he shuts a door or closes a way, it is lest we wander astray. He never leaves one sheep alone in the wilderness, but with his mighty hand he leads us to the right path.
Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways! “For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been his counselor?” “Or who has given a gift to him that he might be repaid?” For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen. (Romans 11:33–36, ESV)
