The Song of Songs (Song of Solomon 1)
1. Title and Author:
In the original Hebrew, Song of Songs means “the greatest of songs,” that is, the most beautiful and most excellent song. This book was written by King Solomon.
2. Theme and Significance of This Book:
On the surface, the Song of Songs portrays the deep and pure love between the Shulammite woman and King Solomon. Yet its spiritual meaning lies in illustrating the united, sacred, and intimate love between Christ and the church (or between God and His chosen people). Through the love between husband and wife, we gain a glimpse of the mystery of Christ and the church: Christ is the Bridegroom, and the church is the bride. This relationship is exactly what Paul refers to in (Ephesians 5:32 NASB2020):“This mystery is great; but I am speaking with reference to Christ and the church.” It is this union of love and life that represents the highest realm of a believer’s union with the Lord.
3. Main Points:
(1)Mutual Longing: It describes the believer’s longing for the Lord’s love, as in: “May he kiss me with the kisses of his mouth! For your love is sweeter than wine” (Song 1:2 NASB2020).
(2)Attraction and Following: Under the Lord’s drawing, believers run after Him (Song 1:4) and continue to grow on the path of faith.
(3)The Joy of Oneness: It emphasizes the union between the Lord and me, and I and the Lord—“My beloved is mine, and I am his” (Song 2:16 NASB2020). This oneness is holy and blessed by God.
(4)The Faithfulness of Love: It celebrates the power of love: “Many waters cannot quench love, nor will rivers overflow it” (Song 8:7 NASB2020), prefiguring the Lord’s eternal love for us and the mutual love between us and Him.
4. Application in the Life of Faith:
The Song of Songs teaches us that in the last days we are to become a bride who is “prepared and adorned”, as described in (Revelation 21:2), pursuing holiness and maturity while waiting for the return of the Lord Jesus. From the perspective of marriage, the meaning of marriage is to manifest God’s will. Through the union of husband and wife in spirit and body as one, we come to understand the mystery of Christ’s love for the church.
Chapter 1 — Its Main Focus:
Chapter 1 mainly describes the believer’s (the bride’s) longing for and pursuit of the Lord Jesus (the Bridegroom):
(1)Longing for Intimacy with the Lord:
The chapter opens with the words, “May he kiss me with the kisses of his mouth,” expressing the most direct longing for the Lord’s love. This signifies that believers are no longer satisfied with mere objective knowledge, but desire living fellowship with the Lord. The text says that the Lord’s “love is sweeter than wine,” showing that spiritual joy far surpasses worldly pleasure.
(2)Running After the Lord:
“Draw me after you and let’s run together!” This reflects the truth that the driving force of faith comes from God’s attraction. When we are moved by the Lord’s love, we are empowered to follow Him and to enter the Lord’s “chambers,” that is, deeper spiritual cultivation and intimate union with the Lord Jesus.
(3)Humble Self-Examination:
The bride says of herself, “I am dark, yet lovely.” Her darkness comes from being scorched by the sun, and it also represents the believer’s awareness of personal sinfulness and lowliness. Yet she is lovely because she has been redeemed by the Lord and clothed with Christ; in His eyes she remains precious and beloved. The passage also reminds us not to neglect “my own vineyard,” meaning that believers must guard their own spiritual lives and not allow busyness in family, work, or ministry to crowd out personal faith and spiritual cultivation.
(4)Seeking the Lord’s Guidance:
The believer asks the Lord “where He pastures His flock,” and the Lord directs her to “follow the tracks of the flock.” This teaches us that in our life of faith, we should follow the footsteps of the saints throughout the generations and remain with the flock of the church. We should not become isolated sheep that wander away, lest we be devoured by the devil, who prowls about like a roaring lion.
