On My Bed Night After Night (Song of Songs 3)
“On my bed night after night I sought him whom my soul loves; I sought him but did not find him. I must arise now and go around in the city, In the streets and in the public squares; I must seek him whom my soul loves. I sought him but did not find him.”
(Song of Songs 3:1–2)
The Song of Songs uses the love between husband and wife to reveal the mystery of Christ and the church. It reminds us that we must pursue such intimate communion with God. Yet human habits and weaknesses are deeply rooted within us, hard to remove. Like the bride in the Song, sometimes we are weak, but by God’s mercy and election we are drawn to rise and seek Him.
“Night” represents darkness, just as our present age nears the end-time darkness. Like the bride, many are not watchful, indulging in worldly pleasures, the lust of the flesh and eyes, and the pride of life. The fruit in the garden is ripening, yet the bride lies on her bed, ignoring the Bridegroom’s gentle call, unwilling to rise and follow His steps to labor together.
“Seeking” shows God’s mercy stirring us to search for the Bridegroom. Perhaps worldly things cannot satisfy the emptiness of the soul, or trials and setbacks awaken us to treasure our Beloved. Yet the bride still lies in bed—faith “lying flat,” not striving for deeper spiritual cultivation or the filling of the Holy Spirit, but comfortably waiting for the day to meet God.
“Arise” shows the bride’s willingness to seek her Beloved, but her direction is mistaken in the beginning: "wandering the city, streets, and squares", places busy with people. Sometimes we too want both the world and God, thinking we can manage both, but failing to be wholly affectionate. As royal priests, we must offer ourselves completely; otherwise intimacy with God remains out of reach.
“Scarcely had I left them When I found him whom my soul loves; I held on to him and would not let him go Until I brought him to my mother’s house, And into the room of her who conceived me.”
(Song of Songs 3:4)
Leaving the broad places of the city, the bride encountered her Beloved. Likewise, when we choose to forsake the world and learn from the Bible how to offer ourselves fully to please God, we meet Him. As Scriptures said: “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.” (Matthew 7:7)
“The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in the field, which a man found and hid again; and from joy over it he goes and sells everything that he has, and buys that field.“Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking fine pearls, and upon finding one pearl of great value, he went and sold everything that he had and bought it.( Matthew 13:44-46 NASB )
In the True Jesus Church we have found the treasure of salvation and eternal life. Therefore, we must learn to forsake all for the hope of eternal life, staying watchful and not missing the Bridegroom’s gentle call, accidentally lost the opportunity to be more intimate with a good man.
“I am my beloved’s, And his desire is for me. Let’s go early to the vineyards; Let’s see whether the vine has budded and its blossoms have opened, And whether the pomegranates have bloomed. There I will give you my love.”
(Song of Songs 7:10, 12)
