Walking with God in Love (Song of Songs 7)
How beautiful and how delightful you are, My love, with all your charms!(Song of Songs 7:6, NASB2020)
This chapter feels like a sweet and sincere dialogue. Solomon continually praises the Shulammite woman, not casually, but with careful attention and genuine admiration. Some of the metaphors may sound exaggerated to us today, as he praises her from head to toe, but the essence is not about outward appearance. It is about the heart that says, “I truly care for you, I value you, and I see the good in you.”
In our daily relationships, we rarely speak this way. We tend to notice flaws or think, “There’s nothing worth mentioning.” Yet this passage reminds us that love needs to be spoken, and spoken concretely. When someone is affirmed and appreciated, confidence and strength grow. This echoes Genesis 1:31: “God saw all that He had made, and behold, it was very good.” From the beginning, God looked at humanity with eyes of goodness. Thus, the appreciation in Song of Songs reflects not only human love but also God’s gaze upon us.
Come, my beloved, let us go out into the country, Let us spend the night in the villages. Let us rise early and go to the vineyards; Let us see whether the vine has budded and its blossoms have opened, And whether the pomegranates have bloomed. There I will give you my love.(Song of Songs 7:11–12, NASB2020)
Here we see an important picture—not just liking, but the desire to share life together, to experience things side by side. True relationship is not only about pleasant feelings; it requires time and companionship. Without shared experiences, relationships hard to deepen or endure. This mirrors our relationship with God. Too often faith becomes something we “activate only when needed”, we pray under pressure or in difficulty, but when life is smooth, we set God aside. Over time, faith becomes a tool for emergencies, rather than a living relationship. Yet this passage shows us a different vision, "a desire to be with God in ordinary life", like walking through fields and vineyards, not only in special moments, but in daily rhythms.
Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.(James 4:8a, NASB2020)
Relationship requires intentional closeness. It is not only that God loves us; we also choose to draw near to Him. When we do, the bond becomes real and secure. Psalm 16:8 says: “I have set the Lord continually before me.” This describes a natural state, living with God always before us, not occasionally remembering Him.
Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks.(1 Thessalonians 5:16–18a, NASB2020)
Unceasing prayer means ongoing dialogue with God. It is not about speaking many words, but about keeping Him present in our lives. It may be a brief word while walking, or a quiet question before making a decision. These small acts are ways of walking with God. Faith is not merely a tool to solve problems; it is a relationship lived daily. It is not about turning to God only in low moments, but opening our lives to Him continually, allowing Him to participate and responding to His love.
From the love in Song of Songs, we glimpse God’s love for us. Immersed in this companionship with Him, we realize that the beginning is not our effort, but His prior love.
We love, because He first loved us.(1 John 4:19, NASB2020)
