The Song of the Redeemed (Isaiah 12)
May 04, 2026
Praise the LORD in song, for He has done glorious things; Let this be known throughout the earth.
Cry aloud and shout for joy, O inhabitant of Zion, For great in your midst is the Holy One of Israel. (Isaiah 12:5-6, NASB)
Chapter 1 to 11 in Isaiah is God’s prophecy of “judgment and salvation”. Although they were in a desperate situation, and must experience God’s salvation and comfort, as well as look up to the revival brought by the Messiah in the future. In Chapter 12, the context is set during the nation’s disastrous judgment. The prophet receives revelation from God, giving advanced notice that God will raise up a Messiah to save the remnant and bring them back to God’s Kingdom. Therefore, the prophet wrote a hymn to thank God, using “Song of Salvation” to praise God, which is a song of survival after the disaster.
The Song of Salvation can be split into 2 sections: 1) Personal praises 2) Group praises (3-6)
And in that day you will say, 'I will give thanks to You, O LORD; For although You were angry with me, Your anger is turned away, And You comfort me. 'Behold, God is my salvation, I will trust and not be afraid; For the LORD GOD is my strength and song, And He has become my salvation.' Therefore you will joyously draw water From the springs of salvation. And in that day you will say, 'Give thanks to the LORD, call on His name. Make known His deeds among the peoples; Make them remember that His name is exalted.' (Isaiah 12:1-4)
Why give thanks to God? Because God’s anger has stopped! In fact, God is angry with people for reasons, for example: when a person does not listen to God, going against His will often, going astray on their own, is prideful, does evil, does not believe in God, unfaithful etc, these sins causes God to be angry, but He still loves His chosen people, so He disciplines them, the point is for them to turn back. As long as a person humbly comes before God, confesses sins and repents to Him, God’s anger will turn away, and God’s mercy and comfort will be received once again.
The LORD is compassionate and gracious,
Slow to anger and abounding in mercy.
He will not always contend with us,
Nor will He keep His anger forever.
(Psalm 103:8-9, NASB)
Repentance is the opportunity God gives people to turn back. In the Bible, when Naomi repented, God opened a way for her when she was returning to her homeland in Judah. She received care from Ruth, her dutiful daughter in law, and received the support of Obed, her grandson. Allowing her to have extreme comfort in old age.
One who conceals his wrongdoings will not prosper,
But one who confesses and abandons them will find compassion. (Proverbs 28:13, NASB)
Life is not smooth sailing. You encounter storms in life such as marriage is in crisis, economic problems, work frustrations, sickness, accidents, loss of family, etc. When hardships and setbacks are like storms in life, how do you face it? Do you rely on God? Or do you complain? During periods of low faith, dear brothers and sisters, do not become avoidant. As long as you cry out to God, God will not forget or abandon you! In David’s life, he experienced pain and suffering, the difficult circumstances shaped him, and he composed the very classic Psalm 23, verse 4: Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. David brushed by death many times, and it is God who saved him. So those who have experienced God’s salvation will remember God and sing songs of praise to Him, just as the prophet Isaiah sang songs of praise to God.
Today, we believe in the Lord, received baptism in flowing water, received God’s salvation, which allowed our sins to be forgiven. Since we have been justified by grace and received God’s great salvation, we should always sing praises and give thanks to God for His salvation! Singing hymns to praise God is a way to spread the gospel. Many truth seekers are moved to tears after hearing hymns and believe in the Lord. As believers, we are not satisfied with just having salvation, we must not forget God’s entrustment to us, to often proclaim good news of His salvation: He is my salvation, God is my strength, God is my song.
