The Direction of Home (Isaiah 16)
May 08, 2026
“For it shall be that, as wandering birds cast out of the nest, so shall the daughters of Moab be at the fords of the Arnon.” (Isaiah 16:2, NASB 2020)
Isaiah chapters 15 and 16 contain the oracle concerning Moab. In verse 2, the Chinese Lü Zhenzhong Version translates it as: “Like scattered birds, like young birds sent away from the nest.” This describes the refugees of Moab wandering from place to place, homeless and helpless, like young birds leaving their nest, not knowing the direction of home or where they should fly.
It is much the same in today’s world. Many people have no goal in life and do not know where their true home is. Even more, they do not realize how far they have drifted from the Father’s house. Like scattered birds, they face the dangers and evil of this world and may be devoured at any time, yet still cannot find the path of peace.
“By faith Abraham, when he was called, obeyed by going out to a place which he was to receive for an inheritance; and he went out, not knowing where he was going. By faith he lived as a stranger in the land of promise, as in a foreign land, dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, fellow heirs of the same promise; for he was looking for the city which has foundations, whose architect and builder is God.” (Hebrews 11:8–10, NASB 2020)
We know whom we have believed, and we also know that this world is only a temporary journey for us. God has prepared for us an eternal dwelling in heaven. When we were first called, perhaps we were still ignorant and uncertain, not knowing how to live in this world. Yet as we pursue our faith and deepen our understanding of the truth, we come to know more clearly how wonderful our heavenly home is. Everything in this world is temporary, and we are only living in an earthly tent for a little while.
“You shall live in booths for seven days; all the native-born in Israel shall live in booths, so that your generations may know that I had the sons of Israel live in booths when I brought them out from the land of Egypt. I am the LORD your God.” (Leviticus 23:42–43, NASB 2020)
The reason God commanded the people of Israel to live in booths during the feast was to remind them that when He brought them out of Egypt, He made them dwell in tents in the wilderness. Every morning, they could gather manna outside their tents. After entering Canaan, they began farming and enjoyed abundant food, yet regardless of whether the harvest was plentiful or not, they were still to keep the Feast of Booths as a permanent statute throughout their generations. This taught them to remain thankful for God’s blessings and to continue looking to Him in hope, because His unceasing grace was the true assurance behind their joyful celebration of the feast. Leaving solid houses to live in temporary tents was also a spiritual reset full of meaning. No matter how beautiful a camping trip may be, it can never become a permanent home. The pleasures of this world are only temporary. True and lasting joy is not found in abundant harvests or a comfortable life without lack. Knowing God is the true source and security of joy, enabling us to look to Him, who truly preserves for mankind an eternal inheritance that will never perish.
“For we know that if our earthly tent which is our house is torn down, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.” (2 Corinthians 5:1, NASB 2020)
