Trust in the True God and Receive True Peace (Isaiah 20)
May 12, 2026
In the year that the commander came to Ashdod, when Sargon the king of Assyria sent him and he fought against Ashdod and captured it, at that time the Lord spoke through Isaiah the son of Amoz, saying, “Go and untie the sackcloth from your hips and take your sandals off your feet.” And he did so, going naked and barefoot. Then the Lord said, “Just as My servant Isaiah has gone naked and barefoot for three years as a sign and token against Egypt and Cush...” (Isaiah 20:1, 3, NASB2020)
The background of Isaiah chapter 20 was during the height of the Assyrian Empire. Around 711 BC, Assyria attacked Ashdod, an important Philistine city, causing great fear in the southern kingdom of Judah. At that time, Judah did not rely solely on God. Instead, they wanted to depend on foreign nations such as Egypt and Cush for military protection. This is the main issue revealed in this chapter.
At the beginning of the chapter, it mentions that the Assyrian king Sargon sent his commander to attack Ashdod. This commander represented the Assyrian army. Then God commanded the prophet Isaiah to walk naked and barefoot for three years as a living message to proclaim God’s warning. The act of “untying the sackcloth from his hips and removing the sandals from his feet” symbolized how Egypt and Cush would one day be taken captive by Assyria, led away naked and barefoot in great shame.
The final verses of the chapter further show that Egypt, which Judah trusted in, would ultimately fail to save them and instead become a cause of dismay and shame.
This passage makes me reflect deeply. Although people today do not face the same national crisis or rely on nations like Egypt or Cush, we often place our sense of security in money, personal ability, relationships, or circumstances. this is no different from Judah’s problem. When outward things appear reliable, we can easily neglect depending on God. Yet this chapter reminds me that everything people rely on can suddenly change. Only God is the true and unshakable foundation. I also reflect on myself: when facing difficulties or making decisions, do I seek God first, or do I simply rely on my own ways and stubbornly follow my own plans?
May God increase our faith, so that we may learn to rely on Him in all things. Even in times of rapid change and unexpected challenges, may we remain calm and secure, and be renewed with strength.
“You will keep the mind that is dependent on You in perfect peace,
For it is trusting in You.
Trust in the Lord forever,
For in God the Lord, we have an everlasting Rock.” (Isaiah 26:3–4, NASB2020)
“Yet those who wait for the Lord
Will gain new strength;
They will mount up with wings like eagles,
They will run and not get tired,
They will walk and not become weary.” (Isaiah 40:31, NASB2020)
