Morning Comes, but Also Night(Isaiah 21)
May 13, 2026
The pronouncement concerning Edom: One keeps calling to me from Seir, “Watchman, how far gone is the night? Watchman, how far gone is the night?” The watchman says, “Morning comes but also night. If you would inquire, inquire; Come back again.”
(Isaiah 21:11–12 NASB2020)
Dumah and Seir both refer to Edom, the descendants of Esau, Jacob’s brother. Throughout history, Edom often stood against God’s people. Therefore, this passage is also a message of judgment from God against Edom. Edom’s final outcome reminds us that if people forsake God and become proud in their hearts, even if they appear strong for a time, they will not be able to stand forever.
When people are in a restless and unstable environment, or when their faith becomes weak, they often become like the Edomites, repeatedly asking, “How much longer? When will the day finally dawn?” Such questions are, in fact, the sentiment of many in present generation. Yet the watchman answers, “Morning comes but also night.” This means that hope is coming, but the darkness has not yet completely passed. The spiritual journey is also like this. God will give comfort and light, but before the Lord returns, the world is still full of suffering, trials, and battles. Therefore, believers must not become careless because of temporary peace, nor should they lose hope because the night seems prolonged.
“The night is almost gone, and the day is near. Therefore let’s rid ourselves of the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light.”
(Romans 13:12 NASB2020)
As children of God, we also bear the mission of being watchmen. We must watch over our own spiritual lives, our families, and the church, and we must also watch over the needs of this generation. When people gradually drift away from God, it becomes difficult for them to discern direction in the darkness. But if we constantly pray, read the Bible, and draw near to God, then even while the night has not yet faded, we can still know that morning is near.
The words, “If you would inquire, inquire; Come back again,” also allow us to see God’s mercy.
God does not reject those who seek Him. Even when people come before Him with weakness and doubts, God still wills them to continue seeking Him. And the phrase “come back” also carries the meaning of turning back and repenting, reminding people that true hope lies in returning once again to God.
Although the present world is like a dark night and people’s hearts are filled with anxiety, God is still in control. As God’s children, we must be a faithful watchman, not lose heart, nor fall asleep, but hold firmly to our faith as we wait for the Lord’s return. For we know that the night will not last forever; the true morning light will surely come.
“And there will no longer be any night; and they will not have need of the light of a lamp nor the light of the sun, because the Lord God will illuminate them; and they will reign forever and ever.”
(Revelation 22:5 NASB2020)
