Rooted Downward, Bearing Fruit Upward (Isaiah 27)
May 19, 2026
“In the days to come Jacob will take root, Israel will blossom and sprout, and they will fill the whole world with fruit.” (Isaiah 27:6, NASB2020)
The LORD is the master of the vineyard. He carefully tends it, watching over it day and night, watering continually with truth and the Holy Spirit so that the trees may grow strong day by day. His desire is that these vines would be rooted downward and bear fruit upward. Without His permission, no one can harm this vineyard. It is like parents who constantly guard and protect the safety of their children. Throughout history, God has removed the dreg from among His people to preserve holiness. Because God is holy, His people must also be set apart. Just as grape juice for Holy Communion must be filtered repeatedly to remove seeds, mud, and impurities, so God knows that only by burning away thorns and briars, breaking down idolatrous altars, and removing false gods can the branches absorb nourishment. Only then can His word truly be received into the hearts of His people.
“Like the striking of Him who struck them, has He struck them? Or like the slaughter of their slain, have they been slain?” (Isaiah 27:7, NASB2020)
At first, the people sinned out of ignorance. Yet God still gave them opportunity, teaching them through discipline rather than judgment what is right and what is wrong. In contrast to Isaiah 13–23, where God’s judgment upon the nations is without mercy, His discipline toward His own people carries expectation and hope. He longs for every tree in His vineyard to be firmly rooted in truth, to know and even become familiar with His word. When trials come, they can cling to the soil and stand firm. He also desires that they sprout, blossom, and bear fruit—spiritual fruit that glorifies Him.
“I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit, He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit, He prunes it so that it may bear more fruit.” (John 15:1–2, NASB2020)
Though outwardly it may appear as suffering, in reality God is purifying the uncleanness within His people’s hearts. If they refuse to return to the right path, those branches will eventually be cut off. On the other hand, God treasures the fruitful branches. In due time, He will carefully harvest them, gathering each fruit with care. Faith must continue to advance, rooted firmly in truth. We must not let hardship mark a permanent end to our faith. Instead, may we all bear spiritual fruit along the journey of faith, until we enter the heavenly Jerusalem together to worship the LORD, the true God who has watered us continually and watched over us day and night.
“All discipline for the moment seems not to be joyful, but sorrowful; yet to those who have been trained by it, afterwards it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness.” (Hebrews 12:11, NASB2020)
