The Cornerstone in Zion(Isaiah 28)
May 20, 2026
For the Lord will rise up as at Mount Perazim,
He will be stirred up as in the Valley of Gibeon,
To do His task, His unusual task,
And to work His work, His extraordinary work.
(Isaiah 28:21, NASB 2020)
The beginning of this chapter speaks of the judgment upon the northern kingdom of Israel, using the phrase “the habitually drunk of Ephraim” to describe the people of northern Israel. They were proud of everything they possessed, yet they did not give glory to God. They took what they boasted in as their crown and placed it upon their heads. This was truly shameful, like a fading flower. A flower withers with time; its beauty is brief, and so is the glory of the wicked. As time passes, the righteousness of God will surely be revealed. When God’s judgment comes, it is like the hail, storm, and mighty agent mentioned in verse 2. Even if one stands on the mountain at the head of the fertile valley, can not avoid God’s punishment.
Beginning in verse 7, we can see that the same situation also occurred in the southern kingdom of Judah. The priests failed to keep their ministry of teaching the truth. Instead, they used their own ideas to distort God’s truth, saying, “Order on order, Line on line.” The phrase “reel with wine” represents their loss of discernment because of sin. Such things still happen today. People may worship the same true God, yet their interpretations of biblical truth can vary greatly. The drunken prophets are then mentioned. They are accused of misinterpreting visions and being unable to discern the will of God. False prophets spread everywhere, speaking only pleasant words and good news, while ignoring the warnings that truly needed to be proclaimed. As a result, the people did not know that they had already fallen into sin, leading to the corruption of the nation’s faith.
The splendid crown of the habitually drunk of Ephraim is trampled underfoot.
(Isaiah 28:3, NASB 2020)
In this chapter, the problems that appeared in both the northern and southern kingdoms were nothing other than exalting themselves while ignoring the God who reigns behind all things. The northern kingdom boasted in everything it possessed, refused to give glory to God, and failed to reflect on its own actions. The southern kingdom, though it had faith outwardly, was inconsistent inside and out, building the foundation of its faith upon falsehood. In today’s society, as believers, we must always guard against becoming such “habitually drunk.” The difference between a drunkard and a believer lies in whether one truly knows God, allows God’s standard to take root in the heart, and makes Jesus the cornerstone of one’s life.
Therefore this is what the Lord God says:
“Behold, I am laying a stone in Zion, a tested stone,
A precious cornerstone for the foundation, firmly placed.
The one who believes in it will not be disturbed.”
(Isaiah 28:16, NASB 2020)
God’s truth never changes. A faith built upon clear standards will not be easily shaken. In contrast, a faith built upon oneself is centered on personal desires, keeps only the rules that are easy to keep, chooses only the path that is easy to walk, and does not fear God. When life goes smoothly, such a person does not give glory to God; when life becomes difficult, he either forsakes God or continually chases after different methods. He is like straw blown by the wind—busy and restless, yet without fruit.May we all learn the truth of God, follow in the footsteps of Jesus, fully obey His will, and take God as our crown.
On that day the Lord of armies will become a beautiful crown
And a glorious wreath to the remnant of His people.
(Isaiah 28:5, NASB 2020)
This also comes from the Lord of armies,
Who has made His counsel wonderful and His wisdom great.
(Isaiah 28:29, NASB 2020)
