Listen Attentively to God, Incline Your Ear to the Lord (Isaiah 51)
留心向神,側耳聽主
June 12, 2026
“Pay attention to Me, My people, And listen to Me, My nation; For a law will go out from Me, And I will bring My justice as a light of the peoples.
(Isaiah 51:4 NASB2020)
This chapter is filled with words of comfort. At that time, the people of Israel were living in exile, surrounded by disappointment and suffering. They felt that God had forgotten them, yet again and again He called out to them: “Listen!” God knows that in times of hardship people are most prone to discouragement and most easily blinded by their circumstances. Therefore, He continually reminded His people to turn their eyes back to Him.
In verses 1, 4, and 7, God repeatedly calls His people to listen. He reminds them that He is the God who saves. They were to remember the rock from which they were cut and the quarry from which they were hewn. They were to look to Abraham their father and to Sarah who gave them birth. When Abraham was only one man, God called him, blessed him, and multiplied him (cf. Isaiah 51:1–2). Through these words, God wanted the exiled people to understand that although they felt forgotten, He had not abandoned them. His plan of redemption had been established long before. God declared that His salvation would endure forever and that His righteousness would never fail. His people needed to hear clearly that His salvation was still at hand.
Listen to Me, you who know righteousness, A people in whose heart is My Law; Do not fear the taunting of people, Nor be terrified of their abuses.(Isaiah 51:7)
Once again, God calls His people to listen. They were not to fear human reproach or be troubled by slander, for those who oppose God are temporary and passing away. Like garments consumed by moths and wool eaten away by insects, they will not endure. But God’s righteousness remains forever, and His salvation extends to all generations (Isaiah 51:8). In the end, God Himself will uphold justice.
Verses 12–16 remind us not to forget that God is the Creator. "I, I Myself, am He who comforts you".
God reminded Israel not to forget His mighty acts of deliverance. Just as He led His people through the Red Sea in the past, He would also lead the redeemed of the Lord back from exile and restore them. As God’s people, we will encounter storms in life, but we must never forget that those storms are not greater than the God who created us, nor greater than the God who has already delivered us from trouble. Every one of us has experienced God’s saving grace, whether in spiritual matters or in physical circumstances. We must not forget His grace.
This is what your Lord, the Lord, your God Who contends for His people says: “Behold, I have taken from your hand the cup of staggering, The chalice of My anger; You will never drink it again.
(Isaiah 51:22 NASB2020)
The staggering described here was not caused by wine, but by confusion and spiritual blindness. The people were overwhelmed by suffering, devastation, and the sword. They had lost sight of the Lord and no longer looked to Him. Yet Jesus Christ ultimately drank the cup of suffering on behalf of the world so that we might receive true peace. Many times, however, even though we know that the Lord has borne our burdens, we continue to cling to our worries and refuse to fully surrender to Him. The Lord has already taken the cup from our hands, yet we stubbornly hold on, unwilling to let go and trust Him completely.
God calls us to remember His salvation and place our hope in Him during times of distress. Trusting in the Lord brings renewed blessing and leads His people out of the wilderness and dry places. Brothers and sisters, perhaps you are walking through a desert season right now. Your strength may be exhausted, and your spiritual life may feel as though it is drying up. You may be experiencing one of the lowest points of your journey. Yet God remains our only true comfort in times of trouble. Despite opposition, pressure, or hardship, this passage stands as God’s message of encouragement to you, calling you to remember what He has done.
The Lord is still covering you with the shadow of His hand. Having experienced His grace and guidance in the past, we can trust that He continues to govern our lives today. If we desire His deliverance and comfort, we must pay attention to Him and incline our ears to His voice.
May we not only hear God’s voice, but also respond to Him in faith. Even in hardship, may we continue to look to the Lord, trusting that His salvation never changes.
Lord, You have heard the desire of the humble; You will strengthen their heart, You will make Your ear attentive.
(Psalm 10:17 NASB2020)
