Attending the Lord’s Banquet (Isaiah 55)
June 16, 2026
You must come near to Me; listen carefully, and you will live. And I will make an everlasting covenant with you, according to the faithful mercies shown to David.
(Isaiah 55:3)
In life, we must have attended many kinds of banquets: weddings, funerals, birthday celebrations, year-end parties, New Year’s Eve dinners, and so on. Yet here in Isaiah, a very special banquet is mentioned—the Lord’s banquet! The Lord’s banquet is His salvation given to mankind—raising up the Messiah, Jesus Christ—to freely deliver humanity! No longer slaves to sin, but entering the kingdom of light, receiving true freedom!
Everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; And you who have no money come, buy and eat. Come, buy wine and milk Without money and without cost.
(Isaiah 55:1)
What is the essence of salvation? God’s salvation is not material! It turns people back from sin, allowing them to enjoy the true blessings God gives—spiritual grace, true joy, and eternal life for the soul! At this banquet three items are present, what do they mean?
Jesus answered and said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again; but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never be thirsty; but the water that I will give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up to eternal life.”
(John 4:13–14) First, water refers to the Holy Spirit that God gives. On the last day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink. The one who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.’” But He said this in reference to the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were to receive.
(John 7:37–39a)
But no one puts a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; for the patch pulls away from the garment, and a worse tear results. Nor do people put new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the wineskins burst, and the wine pours out, and the wineskins are ruined; but they put new wine into fresh wineskins, and both are preserved.
(Matthew 9:16–17)
Wine and milk symbolize the Lord’s teaching—God’s word and truth. Old wineskins and old garments represent the law, while new wineskins point to salvation. Therefore, putting aside all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander, like newborn babies, long for the pure milk of the word, so that by it you may grow in respect to salvation. It is this pure spiritual milk that nourishes our souls!
(1 Peter 2:1–2)
So, how should people respond to God’s salvation? There are four steps to follow:
1.Come (to attend the Lord’s banquet): “The Spirit and the bride say, ‘Come.’ And let the one who hears say, ‘Come.’ And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who desires, take the water of life without cost.” As long as we are willing, there is hope!
(Revelation 22:17)
2.Buy (to receive the Holy Spirit and truth): This buying requires no money—it is with our mind and heart!
3.Listen (to God’s
word): “The one who has ears to hear, let him hear.” Those who truly hear God’s word are blessed!
(Matthew 11:15)
4.Eat (to internalize for benefit): “But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not just hearers who deceive themselves.” Not only hearing, but also living it out!
(James 1:22)
Now is the time of God’s salvation. Listening to sermons is accessible, reading the Bible is accessible, praying is accessible. We must grasp this opportunity to seek God, draw near to Him, and call upon Him! May we all come with a heart that hungers and thirsts for righteousness to attend the Lord’s banquet!
Seek the Lord while He may be found; Call upon Him while He is near.
(Isaiah 55:6)
