The Righteous Will Be Protected (Isaiah 33)
May 25, 2026
The LORD is exalted, for He dwells on high;
He has filled Zion with justice and righteousness.
And He will be the stability of your times,
A wealth of salvation, wisdom, and knowledge;
The fear of the LORD is his treasure.
“Now I will arise,” says the LORD,
“Now I will be exalted, now I will be lifted up.
The peoples will be burned to lime,
Like cut thorns which are burned in the fire.
(Isaiah 33:5-6; 10; 12, NASB)
This chapter’s history is during the reign of Hezekiah, who is the King of Judah, when Sennacherib, King of Assyria, sent a large army to attack Jerusalem. At that time, the Kingdom of Judah was facing a crisis, and the people were panicked and fearful. However, King Hezekiah sought to rely on Egypt. He even scraped down the holy temple’s pillars of gold and silver to pay tribute and seek peace. After the prophet’s continuous encouragement, King Hezekiah finally admitted that he is weak and insufficient, turned back and sought the Lord, ultimately enabling Judah to receive God’s mercy. Overnight, God sent angels to kill the Assyrian army numbered at 185,000, resolving Judah’s unprecedented crisis that nearly led to the destruction of the Kingdom of Judah.
Woe to you, destroyer,
While you were not destroyed;
And he who is treacherous, while others did not deal treacherously with him.
As soon as you finish destroying, you will be destroyed;
As soon as you cease to deal treacherously, others will deal treacherously with you.
(Isaiah 33:1, NASB)
Here it is clearly explained that God is an observant God, and He is upright and just, who would not allow the sinner to be considered non-sinful. The world does not know God, and as a result, looks down upon God’s power and abilities; generating an extremely arrogant mentality, provoking God. They will eventually reap what they sow.
Although we are God’s children and God loves us, this understanding should be further emphasized and often placed in our hearts through the strength of prayer to help us overcome the desires and weaknesses of the flesh. We should constantly examine ourselves to see if our words and deeds are in accordance with God’s will.
Sinners in Zion are terrified;
Trembling has seized the godless.
“Who among us can live with the consuming fire?
Who among us can live with everlasting burning?”
(Isaiah 33:14, NASB)
Zion refers to the place where God Himself is with you. Which means that there are sinners and ungodly people in the church,which reminds me of the metaphor of spreading the net that the Lord Jesus said (Matthew 13:47-50, NASB), The end of the world will be like this, angels will come out and separate the righteous and the wicked and throw the evil people into the fiery furnace, in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Therefore, we know that not everyone who says “Lord, Lord” will enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Only the people who fully obey the Father’s will will be able to enter. For this reason, let us work out our salvation with fear and trembling.
One who walks righteously and speaks with integrity,
One who rejects unjust gain
And shakes his hands so that they hold no bribe;
One who stops his ears from hearing about bloodshed
And shuts his eyes from looking at evil;
(Isaiah 33:15, NASB)
These are the qualities of the righteous person and the standard of character for God’s children. We have God’s virtues and image, and this is the goal that is the direction of our pursuits. This kind of person will be like a tree, planted by the waters, which yields its fruit in its season and its leaf does not wither; and in whatever he does, he prospers. And only this kind of righteous person can rest under the shadow of the Almighty, receiving eternal protection. His bread will be given him, His water will be sure. No matter what kind of age we live in, there will always be problems. God allows us to encounter these problems and troubles in order for us to know God more and let us become closer to God through these highs and lows – just like Job. May these precious experiences of our predecessors enable us to walk more steadily and gratefully on this path of faith.
Seek the LORD,
All you humble of the earth
Who have practiced His ordinances;
Seek righteousness, seek humility.
Perhaps you will remain hidden
On the day of the LORD’s anger.
(Zephaniah 2:3, NASB)
