This Is What God Himself Has Spoken (Isaiah 58)

If, because of the Sabbath, you restrain your foot From doing as you wish on My holy day, And call the Sabbath a pleasure, and the holy day of the Lord honorable, And honor it, desisting from your own ways, From seeking your own pleasure And speaking your own word, Then you will take delight in the Lord.
(Isaiah 58:13-14 NASB2020)
Hymn No. 101, “Love Jesus Only,” has always been one of my favorite hymns. Through its four verses, the lyrics progress step by step from “loving oneself instead of loving Jesus” to the concluding theme of “not loving oneself, but loving Jesus only.”
For us true believers today, keeping the Sabbath often resembles the message of this hymn. There is a constant struggle between "loving Jesus" and "loving ourselves". At times, while serving God, we experience His guidance and mighty work, drawing us into a close relationship with Him. Yet at other times, although we are physically present in church, our hearts remain restless and steps
don't stop, captivated by the colorful distractions on our phones.Occasionally, for personal matters, we may even “take half a day off” from the Sabbath.
Our Heavenly Father says that the Sabbath is “My holy day.” He desires that we honor this day and find delight in it. It is much like a father who is home on his day off, hoping to spend more time with his children, enjoy deeper interaction with them, strengthen the parent-child relationship, and provide them with a greater sense of happiness and security.
Will we merely go through the motions, assuming there will always be another opportunity later? Or do we truly love our Heavenly Father enough that, from Friday sunset until Saturday sunset, we treasure every moment of this "high-quality" time spent with Him?
And I will make you ride on the heights of the earth; And I will feed you with the heritage of Jacob your father, For the mouth of the Lord has spoken.
(Isaiah 58:14 NASB2020)
There are two blessings promised to those who faithfully keep the Sabbath:
1. “To ride on the heights of the earth” refers to earthly blessings and God’s provision in our daily lives (cf. Deuteronomy 33:13–14). 2. “To feed you with the heritage of Jacob your father” represents receiving spiritual blessings, particularly the nourishment of God’s truth (cf. Deuteronomy 33:4).
These blessings are not merely human hopes—they are promises that “the mouth of the LORD has spoken.” God’s word is like the rain and snow that come down from heaven and never return empty(cf. Isaiah 55:10–11). As long as we wholeheartedly keep the Sabbath, we may confidently look forward to both earthly and spiritual blessings. It is like preparing for a wonderful journey: the Father has already booked the tickets and reserved the hotel. All we need to do is stay close to Him and follow His lead to enjoy the beauty of the trip. Yet our faith often rises and falls with our weaknesses. We frequently choose our own path rather than follow God’s footsteps. When our relationship with Him becomes distant and inconsistent, we naturally become insensitive to the blessings He has promised.
For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons and daughters of God. For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons and daughters by which we cry out, “Abba! Father!”
(Romans 8:14-15 NASB2020)
Thank God that in
our weakness, we have the help of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words, praying on our behalf according to the will of God (cf. Romans 8:26–27). Through His guidance, we are led into all truth. As we come to understand and put that truth into practice, we begin to experience God’s faithfulness and abundance firsthand. We then realize that our Heavenly Father is not distant, abstract, or beyond reach; rather, He is real, ever-present, and always by our side, waiting for us to call upon Him as “Abba, Father.”
May the Lord help us wholeheartedly remember the Sabbath and keep it holy. May we become true believers who delight in God, enjoying the joy and richness that are found in Christ.
As sorrowful yet always rejoicing, as poor yet making many rich, as having nothing and yet possessing all things.
(2 Corinthians 6:10 NASB2020)
