People God Looks Favorably On and People He Does Not Delight In (Isaiah 66)
June 27, 2026
I. The People God Looks Favorably On:
1. Those Who Are Humble, Contrite, and Tremble at God's Word
The LORD says: "All these things My hand has made, and so all these things came into being," declares the LORD. "But to this one I will look: to one who is humble and contrite in spirit, and who trembles at My word." (Isaiah 66:2, NASB 2020)
Those who hear God's word, examine themselves, and develop a heart of fear are the people God looks upon with favor. They realize they have not yet reached God's standard. They admit their mistakes.
They are sorry for their sins. They humble themselves.
They truly repent.
They do their best to correct their wrong ways. These are the people whom God is willing to care for.
Those who tremble at God's word will see His glory and rejoice.
2. Those Who Love Jerusalem
"Be joyful with Jerusalem and rejoice for her, all you who love her... For this is what the LORD says: 'Behold, I extend peace to her like a river, and the glory of the nations like an overflowing stream... You will be comforted in Jerusalem. Then you will see this, and your heart will be glad, And your bones will flourish like the new grass; And the hand of the LORD will be made known to His servants, But He will be indignant toward His enemies.
(cf.Isaiah 66:10–14, NASB 2020)
Those who love Jerusalem will receive glory and joy(10-14).To love Jerusalem means to love God and to love His church. When they see the church suffer or become weak, they grieve.
They do not enjoy criticizing. They do not attack, mock, slander, or judge the church. They do not stand outside as if the church has nothing to do with them. People who only criticize the church are proud and self-righteous.
Every one of us is part of the church.
The weaknesses of the church are the responsibility of all of us.When we see a problem, we should take responsibility.
We should become people who repair the breaches, not people who only complain. Those who love the church will receive greater joy.
God will fill them with abundant glory.
He will give them peace like a river.
He will comfort them. He will refresh them. May we see the prosperity of Jerusalem all the days of our lives. (See Psalm 128:5.)
II. God Does Not Delight in Hypocrites
"The one who slaughters an ox is like one who kills a person; the one who sacrifices a lamb is like one who breaks a dog's neck; the one who offers a grain offering is like one who offers pig's blood; the one who burns frankincense is like one who blesses an idol. As they have chosen their own ways, and their soul delights in their abominations, so I will choose their punishments and bring on them what they dread. Because I called, but no one answered; I spoke, but they did not listen. Instead they did evil in My sight and chose that in which I did not delight." (Isaiah 66:3–4, NASB 2020)
Hypocrites are people who do evil in God's sight during daily life, yet continue offering worship before people. They have an appearance of godliness but deny its true power.
They may actively serve and worship in church, but at home, at school, and at work they do not live like Christians. They live like unbelievers.
They do not maintain a life of Bible reading and prayer.
They do not obey God's word. God does not accept this kind of worship.
Their sacrifices become offensive to God.The more they serve without true obedience, the more they provoke God's anger. They live according to their own ideas instead of God's truth.Their faith is separated from their daily life.
They hear God's word but never change. They wear a mask when they come to church.
God calls them, but they do not respond.
God allows deception to come upon them.It may be false teaching.
It may be worldly desires.God also allows what they fear to come upon them.
If we are like this, we must repent and change.Otherwise, judgment will come.
We should become true Israelites.
We should remove our false masks.
We should receive God's word deep into our hearts. We should put His word into practice.
We should let His truth change our lives. We should no longer treat His word as something we simply hear and forget. Instead, we should plant it deeply in our hearts.
We should let it grow and bear fruit—
thirtyfold, sixtyfold,
and a hundredfold.
Then our service will be acceptable to God.For church workers, spiritual cultivation must come first. When our spiritual life is healthy, our service will also be healthy and acceptable to God. Church workers have great responsibility and influence. We should value the ministry God has given us.
Daily spiritual cultivation is essential.Read one to three chapters of the Bible every day.
Pray for at least ten to thirty minutes every day. Let us faithfully build our spiritual cultivation together, offer better service to God,
and avoid becoming hypocrites.
