Take Warning from the “Rejected Silver” (Jeremiah 6)
July 3, 2026
All of them are stubbornly rebellious, Going about as a slanderer; They are bronze and iron. They are, all of them, corrupt. The bellows blow fiercely, The lead is consumed by the fire; In vain the refining goes on, But the wicked are not separated. They call them rejected silver, Because the Lord has rejected them.
(Jeremiah 6:28-30 NASB2020)
“Rejected silver” is the LORD’s final verdict upon the people of Judah through the prophet Jeremiah. In ancient times, silver was refined by heating ore at high temperatures to remove impurities(such as lead and zinc), leaving behind pure silver.Throughout the Bible, silver was often used as the payment for atonement or ransom, symbolizing the price of redemption. The redemption money offered before God reminded His people of His saving grace and also served as compensation when His holy things had been violated.
In this chapter, God repeatedly warned Judah through His prophet and refined them through suffering, intending to remove their iniquity and purify their spiritual lives. Yet the LORD declared that His chosen people were “stubbornly rebellious” and were “bronze and iron.”They had become utterly corrupt and remained hard-hearted to the very end. No matter how often they were refined, they remained nothing but dross. Though they were God’s children , they showed no response to His work, revealing hearts that had become thoroughly corrupted and unwilling to repent. Even repeated refining produced no change. Such persistent rebellion had exhausted God’s long-suffering patience, under offensive to both God and man, their rejection became inevitable.
“Son of man, the house of Israel has become waste metal to Me; all of them are bronze, tin, iron, and lead in the smelting furnace; they are the waste metal of silver. Therefore, this is what the Lord God says: ‘Because all of you have become waste metal, therefore, behold, I am going to gather you into the midst of Jerusalem. As they gather silver, bronze, iron, lead, and tin into the smelting furnace to blow fire on it in order to melt it, so I will gather you in My anger and in My wrath, and I will place you there and melt you. And I will gather you and blow on you with the fire of My wrath, and you will be melted in the midst of it. As silver is melted in the furnace, so you will be melted in the midst of it; and you will know that I, the Lord, have poured out My wrath on you.’ ”
(Ezekiel 22:18-22 NASB2020)
This is the cup of wrath that God pours out upon His unbelieving people, and it also foreshadows the final judgment that every person must face one day. Over the years, I have heard of truth seekers who delayed baptism for a long time because of weak faith, as well as family members within the church who repeatedly postponed dedicating their lives to God despite having received the precious Holy Spirit. When someone unexpectedly passes away before taking that final step of obedience, the news is especially heartbreaking.
As for those of us who are already in Christ, we should remember that an outward appearance of godliness can never replace true repentance inward. If we continually reject God’s word, we may eventually reach the point where no further refining can accomplish.
The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not willing for any to perish, but for all to come to repentance.
(2 Peter 3:9 NASB2020)
