Conduct Yourselves in a Manner Worthy of The Gospel(Jeremiah 7)

July 4, 2026

"Amend your ways and your deeds, and I will let you dwell in this place. Do not trust in deceptive words, saying, 'This is the temple of the LORD, the temple of the LORD, the temple of the LORD.'" (Jeremiah 7:3–4, NASB 2020)

In this chapter, the prophet Jeremiah delivered God's message because of the sins of the people of Judah. During the reign of King Jehoiakim, the people offered sacrifices at the temple while continuing to sin and worship the idols of Canaan. They even followed pagan customs by building the high place of Topheth in the Valley of Ben-hinnom and burning their sons and daughters as sacrifices, which was completely against God's law. Yet they trusted that the temple would protect them. They refused to repent and would not listen to God's word. Therefore, through Jeremiah, God gave a serious warning that He would reject His people, destroy the temple called by His name, and make Jerusalem and the cities of Judah desolate.

"Will you steal, murder, commit adultery, swear falsely, offer sacrifices to Baal, and follow other gods that you have not known, then come and stand before Me in this house, which is called by My name, and say, 'We are saved!'—so that you may do all these abominations?" (Jeremiah 7:9–10, NASB 2020)

Today we should ask ourselves whether we are like the people of Judah. Do we depend on the church for security? Do we think that because we have been baptized into Christ and received the Holy Spirit, we already have eternal life and the kingdom of heaven, while refusing to change our sinful habits? Do we still follow horoscopes, fortune-telling, feng shui, or traditional superstitions? Do we bring worldly ideas about status into the church, seeking titles and positions instead of humility? Do we like arguments, influence others for personal gain, value our own ability above biblical truth, use God's gifts to promote ourselves, and seek attention in the church?

"You shall say to them, 'This is the nation that did not obey the voice of the LORD their God or accept discipline. Truth has perished and has been eliminated from their mouth. Cut off your hair and throw it away, and take up a song of mourning on the bare heights; for the LORD has rejected and abandoned the generation of His wrath.'" (Jeremiah 7:28–29, NASB 2020)

We should take this chapter as a warning. When the church no longer holds firmly to God's truth and becomes filled with human power struggles and competition, God Himself will destroy His temple and reject those who remain in their sins. As Romans 11:20–21 teaches, God is severe toward those who fall away. Those who believe in Jesus but turn away from the truth are like branches that are cut off. Therefore, we must stay alert and examine ourselves carefully. Let our conduct be worthy of the gospel we have received. Whether in the church or in society, may people see God's truth and His love through our lives, and may everything we do bring glory to God.

"Only conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or remain absent, I will hear about you, that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel." (Philippians 1:27, NASB 2020)
