Return to God(Jeremiah 8)
July 5, 2026
"This is what the LORD says: 'Do people fall and not get up? Does one turn away and not repent?'" (Jeremiah 8:4, NASB 2020)
When people fall, they normally get up. When they go the wrong way, they usually turn back. But the people of Judah knew they had turned away from God, yet they refused to repent. They chose to keep living their own way.
This passage reminds us that sometimes we already know what is right, but because of stubbornness, old habits, or an unwillingness to change, we stay the same. Small things such as speaking without patience, complaining, lacking thankfulness, or putting God last may seem unimportant. But little by little, they can lead us farther away from God.
"I have listened and heard, they have spoken what is not right; no one repented of his wickedness, saying, 'What have I done?' Everyone turned to his own course, like a horse charging into the battle." (Jeremiah 8:6, NASB 2020)
People often rush into the wrong way, just like a horse charging into battle without fear. Many times, when problems come, our first reaction is to depend on ourselves instead of seeking God's guidance. When things go well, we think we are strong enough. Only after failure do we remember to seek God. God has never left us, but we often move too fast to stop and listen to His voice.
"They heal the brokenness of the daughter of My people superficially, saying, 'Peace, peace,' but there is no peace." (Jeremiah 8:11, NASB 2020)
The false prophets only said what the people wanted to hear. They refused to point out the real problem and gave people a false sense of peace. Today our world is also full of many voices. Some say success, wealth, or pleasure will bring happiness. But if our lives are not built on God, no amount of success can bring true peace. True peace is not a life without trouble. True peace is trusting that God is with us even in difficult times. When we honestly admit our sins, accept God's discipline, and allow Him to change our lives, we experience the true peace that comes from God instead of temporary comfort.
"Harvest is past, summer is ended, and we are not saved." (Jeremiah 8:20, NASB 2020)
These words are full of regret. The people missed one opportunity after another to repent, and only regretted it after judgment came. There are many things in life that should not be delayed. Some relationships need to be restored. Some words need to be spoken. Some sins need to be confessed to God. Some paths need to be changed. If we always say, "Later," we may miss the opportunities God gives us, just like the people of Judah. Do not leave repentance until tomorrow. Do not think there will always be more time. If God speaks to us today, we should obey today. If God moves us to forgive, to confess, or to love someone today, we should not delay.
Spiritual growth does not mean we never fall. It means we are willing to repent after we fall, willing to turn back when we wander away, and willing to trust God again after failure. May we keep a humble and teachable heart every day. May we examine ourselves often. May God's word become the guide for our lives. May we trust that His grace and mercy are enough for us, and that He will lead us step by step in the way that pleases Him.
"Trust in the LORD with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight." (Proverbs 3:5–6, NASB 2020)
