What do we boast about?(Jeremiah 9)
July 6, 2026
This is what the LORD says: “Let no wise man boast of his wisdom, nor let the mighty man boast of his might, nor a rich man boast of his riches; but let the one who boasts boast of this, that he understands and knows Me, that I am the LORD who exercises mercy, justice, and righteousness on the earth; for I delight in these things,” declares the LORD. (Jeremiah 9:23-24, NASB)
Chapter 9 of Jeremiah happened in the context of the end times of the Southern Kingdom of Judah. The peoples at the time have already departed from God in their hearts, and filled with idolatry, following Baal, greedy for injustice and all sorts of evil sins. Following the message of chapter 8, because the peoples were unwilling to repent, their spirituality was corrupted, and the prophet Jeremiah is deeply grieved by the upcoming judgment. From the first verse: “Oh, that my head were waters And my eyes a fountain of tears,”, we see that Jeremiah has been deemed “the tearful prophet”, because he saw the peoples abandon God, and know that they will face God’s righteous judgment, and so he wept bitterly for them.
The peoples were committing sexual immorality, lying, lying to each other, plotting to harm others, and abandoning God’s commandments, following their own hearts to worship Baal, and continuously sinning without repentance. Therefore, God pronounced judgment: He will make Jerusalem a devastation and cause the people to be separated into different nations. Swords and calamity befalls them, and he instructed the wailing women to mourn for the people. However, amidst the heavy judgment and message, this phrases of 23 and 24 of this chapter left a very precious message: This is what the LORD says: “Let no wise man boast of his wisdom, nor let the mighty man boast of his might, nor a rich man boast of his riches; but let the one who boasts boast of this, that he understands and knows Me,”. We, on earth, are often lacking in abilities, money becoming the standard of success in life. In order to become successful in life, we stop at nothing, even forsaking the time to come near God to chase after the success of the world. Yet, God reminds us, this will all pass away, only knowing God is the true and eternal blessing.
When reading this passage, I thought to myself: how do I let myself not become like the Israelites? Earthly riches are incredibly alluring, it lets us see its good, and it can truly bring about pleasure, convenience, and power. Yet, when we slowly become immersed in it, the desires within our hearts will become inflated, becoming increasingly greedy, and even stopping at nothing to get more.
In contrast, knowing God, following God, the beauty within does not manifest overnight; it often demands a great deal of sweat and tears. We must keep God’s commandments, living out our lives and continuously bearing spiritual fruits. This road is not easy, compared to the visions of the lavish splendors seen in front of us, we cannot see the treasures in heaven, and sometimes we lose patience, even giving up halfway.
In facing these kinds of temptation, how do we maintain our faith and not go astray from God’s path? Thank God, He understands our weaknesses and has gifted us the more precious Holy Spirit, becoming the guide to our lives. When we are willing to submit to the Holy Spirit, and keep God’s word within our hearts, then we will receive strength when we are lost or in trouble, not leaving the Truth, and continuously going toward a direction that God is happy with.
May we avoid repeating the same mistakes, taking heed to the wrongs committed by those before us, not letting worldly values and pleasures displace God’s teachings, abidance. Guard one’s heart and not forgetting original aspirations.
Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world. The world is passing away, and also its lusts; but the one who does the will of God lives forever. (1 John 2:15-17, NASB)
