It Is Fitting to Fear the LORD (Jeremiah 10)
July 07, 2026
This is what the LORD says: "Do not learn the ways of the nations or be terrified by signs in the heavens, though the nations are terrified by them." (Jeremiah 10:2)
Throughout the Bible, God repeatedly points out the error of the house of Israel in worshiping idols. The same problem can still be seen today. People are afraid of things they cannot control, so they look for something other than God to depend on. They create idols with their own hands, believing these idols can protect them. This pattern continues because people refuse to obey the one true God and do not know the only Savior. As a result, they become trapped in their own deception and human thinking. The nations, unlike God's people, made idols to comfort themselves and strengthen the confidence of their people. Therefore, God reminds us not to follow their ignorant ways, but to know the LORD, the true God.
"Like a scarecrow in a cucumber field, their idols cannot speak; they must be carried because they cannot walk. Do not fear them; they can do no harm nor can they do any good." (Jeremiah 10:5)
Who dares to expose such falsehood? We should not be threatened by their loud claims or outward display. We must remember that their false gods have no power to bring disaster, nor do they have the power to give blessings. There is no reason to follow them. Their idols are like lifeless posts standing in one place. They need people to decorate them and carry them around. Around the world there are many kinds of false idols. Most remain in temples or shrines, and some are only taken out on special occasions. However we look at them, they are not free, and it is difficult to believe they possess any mighty power.
"Who should not fear you, King of the nations? This is your due. Among all the wise leaders of the nations and in all their kingdoms, there is no one like you." (Jeremiah 10:7)
"The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding." (Proverbs 9:10)
No matter how much authority a person may have on earth, no one can compare with the true God who created heaven and earth. Who should not fear Him? Since we are all created by God, it is only right to fear Him. Everything is under His rule. The rich do not survive by their own ability to provide for themselves, and wise people cannot preserve their lives by their own wisdom. From the moment we are born into this world, we depend on the almighty God for life itself. Those who know the true God should recognize that life, strength, wisdom, and peace all come from Him. Therefore, a heart that truly knows God will naturally fear Him.
"Everyone is senseless and without knowledge; every goldsmith is shamed by his idols. The images he makes are a fraud; they have no breath in them. They are worthless, the objects of mockery; when their judgment comes, they will perish." (Jeremiah 10:14–15)
This deception has existed throughout history and will continue until the end. The Bible clearly tells us that the devil hangs around looking for someone to devour. What appears to be people deceiving others is often the work of Satan through human instruments. Sadly, people usually feel regret and shame only after the truth is revealed. Even the craftsmen who carve idols are themselves deceived. As they make the idols, they should know they are only pieces of wood. How could they possibly contain the breath of life? Yet because Satan has overcome them, their eyes are blinded and they cannot see the truth. We who believe in the Lord and know the true God must guard ourselves and also help others escape from the sin of idol worship.
"The shepherds are senseless and do not inquire of the LORD; so they do not prosper and all their flock is scattered." (Jeremiah 10:21)
When God's workers go astray, the whole church is greatly affected. If they do not depend fully on God but follow worldly customs and false practices, they become unfaithful and rebellious toward Him. As a result, they do not prosper because God is not pleased, and His judgment comes upon them. The flock is wounded and scattered. Therefore, we must watch our steps carefully. In everything we do, we should avoid worldly customs and not follow our own desires. Instead, we should seek the Lord and draw near to Him, so that we will not become like senseless animals and cause God's flock to suffer. Let us encourage and pray for one another.
"Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted. Carry each other's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ." (Galatians 6:1–2)
"LORD, I know that people's lives are not their own; it is not for them to direct their steps." (Jeremiah 10:23)
Jeremiah prayed to God on behalf of the people. Human beings are small and weak. If God's wrath had fallen on them, they would have been completely destroyed. Because of their rebellion, the people first needed to admit their sins before they could return to God. They could not simply blame others. Refusing to face our own faults and stubbornly holding on to our own ideas. We should come before God honestly, confess our sins, and sincerely seek His mercy and help. Only then can we be delivered from evil and escape temptation. This is not something we can overcome by our own strength, only through the Lord's help. This also reminds us that if we leave the Lord's way, we will be overcome by the devil and led into sin. No one can stay on the right path by relying on himself. Therefore, it is only fitting that we wholeheartedly follow the Lord and fear Him. He Himself will guide, watch over, and protect every step we take.
"Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD and shun evil." (Proverbs 3:5–7)
