Making the Lord Our Trust (Jeremiah 17)
July 14, 2026
“The sin of Judah is written down with an iron stylus; With a diamond point it is engraved on the tablet of their hearts and on the horns of their altars.” (Jeremiah 17:1, NASB)
God once gave His people the law engraved on stone tablets, hoping that they would inscribe His word upon their hearts, making it the principle for their life and conduct. Yet the people of Judah did not engrave God’s commandments on their hearts. Instead, they deeply engraved sin and idolatry within, as if carved with an iron stylus on stone or with a diamond point on precious gems, leaving indestructible marks. This shows that Judah’s sins were not merely occasional weaknesses or accidental faults, but deeply rooted in their thoughts, values, and way of life. It reminds us that if the heart is not filled with God’s word, it will easily be occupied by worldly values and desires. Only when God’s word is engraved deeply on the heart can life walk in the way pleasing to Him.
When Joseph faced the temptation from Potiphar’s wife, he said: “How then could I do this great evil and sin against God?”.When temptation came, God’s word and godly values were firmly rooted in Joseph’s heart, enabling him to gently yet resolutely reject temptation. With fear for God as his principle, he made a choice that was pleasing to Him.
“This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it; for then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will achieve success.” (Joshua 1:8, NASB)
“Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, And whose trust is the Lord. For he will be like a tree planted by the water, That extends its roots by a stream, And does not fear when the heat comes; But its leaves will be green, And it will not be anxious in a year of drought, Nor cease to yield fruit.” (Jeremiah 17:7–8, NASB)
God has not promised that the sky will always be blue, nor that life’s path will always be smooth and carefree. Yet He has promised to be with us in every circumstance, as our ever-present help and strength. The key to a life of faith does not lie in whether the environment is smooth, but in whether we continually rely on God and remain closely connected to Him. When our lives are deeply rooted in God’s word, like a tree planted by the water and rooted by the stream, drawing living water from the source of life, even in times of heat, drought, adversity, or unknown challenges, we will not be shaken.
“Remain in Me, and I in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it remains in the vine, so neither can you unless you remain in Me. I am the vine, you are the branches; the one who remains in Me, and I in him bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing.” (John 15:4–5, NASB)
For what we rely on is not our own strength, but God’s abundant and unfailing supply. With the Lord’s presence, our hearts can be steadfast and secure, finding peace in storms and hope in trials. Even in difficult circumstances, life can remain green and not wither, continually bearing fruit that glorifies God.
“But his delight is in the Law of the Lord, And on His Law he meditates day and night. He will be like a tree planted by streams of water, Which yields its fruit in its season, And its leaf does not wither; And in whatever he does, he prospers.” (Psalm 1:2–3, NASB)
