Knowing God Will Bring Blessings (Jeremiah 22)

July 19, 2026

He pled the cause of the afflicted and the poor,

Then it was well.

Is that not what it means to know Me?”

Declares the Lord. (Jeremiah 22:16)

Knowing God doesn’t mean just knowing His name; rather, like King Josiah, we must apply God’s righteousness in our daily lives—having compassion for those in hardship, relieving the poor, and following His will. When we living in the likeness of God , that is  we truly know Him and will be blessed by Him.

“But your eyes and your heart

Are intent only upon your own dishonest gain,

And on shedding innocent blood,

And on practicing oppression and extortion.”

Therefore this is what the Lord says regarding Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah:

“They will not mourn for him:

‘Oh, my brother!’ or, ‘Oh, sister!’

They will not mourn for him:

‘Oh, for the master!’ or, ‘Oh, for his splendor!’

He will be buried with a donkey’s burial,

Dragged off and thrown out beyond the gates of Jerusalem. (Jeremiah 22:17-19)

Josiah feared and followed God’s law; he not only led the common people to worship God but also applied God’s righteousness in his daily life. On the other hand, his son, Jehoiakim, grew up in a nation that worshipped the true God, yet he failed to follow in his father's footsteps and fear God. Instead, he built a magnificent palace by exploiting his people, shedding innocent blood, and pursuing his own self-interests. Consequently, through the prophet, God prophesied that Jehoiakim would face severe judgment.

Our parents’ godliness is not our own, and their faith is not our faith. Although we may grow up in the church, if we come only for our parents’ sake without a personal experience of faith, everything we do becomes a mere outward formality.

Jacob also made a vow, saying, “If God will be with me and will keep me on this journey that I take, and give me food to eat and garments to wear, and I return to my father’s house in safety, then the Lord will be my God. (Genesis 28:20-21)

Jehoiakim had such a great role model of faith, yet he failed to make his father’s faith his own. Jacob, on the other hand, had a fresh encounter after he met God. We should learn from him, ensuring that the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob truly becomes "my God".

It is such a great blessing that we are chosen by God. However, this grace is not the end; it is only the beginning of our faith. The true measure of being blessed lies in whether we truly know God, follow His commandments, and hold fast to what we believe until the end.

“Be reconciled with Him, and be at peace;

Thereby good will come to you. (Job 22:21)
