Hope Still Exists Amid Brokenness (Jeremiah 52)

August 18, 2026

Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came, he and all his army, against Jerusalem... The city was besieged... He burned the house of the Lord, the king’s palace, and all the houses of Jerusalem... The bronze pillars which belonged to the house of the Lord and the stands and the bronze sea, which were in the house of the Lord, the Chaldeans broke in pieces and carried all their bronze to Babylon... (cf. NASB, Jeremiah 52:4, 7, 13, 17)

In the final chapter of the Bible of Jeremiah, the record of this history serves as proof that Jeremiah’s prophecies were fulfilled. The wrath of the Lord was kindled, Jerusalem fell into the hands of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, the temple and the royal palace were burned down, and the people were carried away into captivity. All the prophecies declared by the prophet of God as commanded by the Lord were fulfilled one by one at this time.

The prophet Jeremiah preached these prophecies for forty years. At that time, the people refused to listen to him, the kings even persecuted him, and false prophets deceived the people with lying words. The prophecy that the nation was about to perish sounded like very nonsense in the ears of the people of Judah; nevertheless, though God’s word may not be fulfilled immediately, it will surely come to pass in the end.

Our life of faith is much the same. In our prayers, we plead earnestly, hoping that our difficulties may be resolved, asking God to display His mighty arm to uphold us directly; yet often, there is still no progress in our circumstances, and affliction continues to weigh heavily upon us, leaving us breathless. What about our hands raised in prayer, then? Will they gradually grow weary and stop because we wait so long without receiving an answer? "For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways,” declares the Lord. “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts" (NASB, Isaiah 55:8-9). God’s arrangements have His own appointed time. We may not be able to understand, and we may even feel exhausted during the long wait; yet the elevation of our faith occurs precisely as we learn to rely on God more deeply in the midst of trials. Even if we cannot see the answer before our eyes, we can still believe that God surely has His most wonderful will.

"And as I have watched over them to tear up, to tear down, to overthrow, to destroy, and to bring disaster, so I will watch over them to build and to plant,” declares the Lord (NASB, Jeremiah 31:28). Although Judah faced the tragedy of captivity, the end of this chapter records the release of Jehoiachin, leaving a ray of hope for the entire book. Judah received God’s discipline, yet God’s mercy and grace were never severed because of it. The prophet’s message included not only the downfall of the kingdom of Judah, but also the promise of return and restoration. God will not forsake His people; setbacks and discipline are not the end, but are intended to bring us to maturity and to rebuild us out of our brokenness.

Affliction is hard to bear, yet God always prepares a way out for us. The discipline provided by God aims to refine our hearts, enabling us to examine ourselves, admit our faults, repent, and make a firm resolve to turn back to Him. When we look back, we may discover that the hardships we once thought impossible to endure actually became the very process through which God shaped us and led us to know Him more deeply.

In the Bible of Jeremiah, we observe that although the prophet Jeremiah suffered curse, humiliate, and even physical beatings, he nevertheless fearlessly and faithfully held fast to his mission, determined to declare God’s word—and these prophecies were all fulfilled in this chapter. So then, in our life of faith, are we also willing to believe that God’s word will ultimately be accomplished? On the path toward the heavenly kingdom, what we rely upon is precise faith and hope—unseen by human eyes, yet truly existing. May God lead us so that, even when surrounded by affliction and long waiting, we may still patiently wait for His response, believing that His ways are higher than our ways, and discerning His grace constantly abiding with us through every brokenness and restoration of life.

"Although the Lord has given you bread of privation and water of oppression, He, your Teacher will no longer hide Himself, but your eyes will behold your Teacher" (NASB, Isaiah 30:20).
