Son of man, do you see? (Ezekiel 8)

August 31, 2026

“Then He said to me, “Son of man, raise your eyes now toward the north.” So I raised my eyes toward the north, and behold, to the north of the altar gate was this idol of jealousy at the entrance. And He said to me, “Son of man, do you see what they are doing, the great abominations which the house of Israel are committing here, so that I would be far from My sanctuary? But yet you will see still greater abominations!”” Ezekiel 8:5-6 NASB2020

The “sanctuary” should be God’s dwelling place, the place where God resides. However, in this chapter, God is far from his own sanctuary. The reason God distance himself is because the house of Israel is filled with great abominations, provoking the jealous One True God. According to the vision seen by the prophet Ezekiel, the idols were not only in such a conspicuous place as the “north altar gate” (see Ezekiel 8:5), but also hidden “within the walls” (see Ezekiel 8:7-10), filled with many idols.

“Then He said to me, “Do you see, son of man, what the elders of the house of Israel are doing in the dark, each man in the rooms of his carved images? For they say, ‘The Lord does not see us; the Lord has abandoned the land.’ ”” (Ezekiel 8:12 NASB2020) If idols occupy the heart of a shepherd, and the shepherd worships idols in secret, he has no experience of the One True God, and the message he conveys has no power; it may even lead to teachings that deviate from the truth. But the Father, who sees everything in secret, sees it all (see Matthew 6:6).

“Then He brought me to the entrance of the gate of the Lord’s house which was toward the north; and behold, women were sitting there weeping for Tammuz. Then He brought me into the inner courtyard of the Lord’s house. And behold, at the entrance to the temple of the Lord, between the porch and the altar, were about twenty-five men with their backs to the temple of the Lord while their faces were toward the east; and they were prostrating themselves eastward toward the sun.”

(Ezekiel 8:14, 16 NASB2020)

Those who come to the Lord’s house should be worshiping God, “ and behold” some weep for idols at the temple entrance, and further in, some even turn their backs on the temple to worship the sun. From the outer courtyard to the inner courtyard, there is no sound of thanksgiving and praise to God; instead, there is the sound of idolatry.

What severely affects believers' worship of God today is nothing more than the cell phone in everyone's hand. Bound by our phones at home, we remain bound to them even at church. Social media, online shopping deals, game tasks, investment information, short videos, Saturday sporting events, etc., are our emotions often swayed by these things, like the women weeping for Tammus, losing their peace and security in Christ? Are our minds always preoccupied with everything on our phones, even becoming obsessed and unable to extricate ourselves, while showing no interest in the sermon, like those who turn their backs on the temple to worship the sun in the east? As soon as the service begins, the spirit of deep sleep closes our eyes (Isaiah 29:10).

“Therefore, I indeed will deal in wrath. My eye will have no pity nor will I spare; and though they cry out in My ears with a loud voice, yet I will not listen to them.”” (Ezekiel 8:18 NASB2020)

When God's sanctuary is filled with idols from the outside in, from top to bottom, God will distance himself from his sanctuary, closing his eyes and ears to the cries of his chosen people.

“And the city has no need of the sun or of the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God has illuminated it, and its lamp is the Lamb. and nothing unclean, and no one who practices abomination and lying, shall ever come into it, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life.” (Revelation 21:23, 27 NASB2020)

God's sanctuary is the place of God's glory. At that time, God spiritually brought the prophet Ezekiel, who was in a foreign land, to Jerusalem, allowing him to see this vision. God repeatedly and earnestly asked the prophet, "Son of man, do you see?" (see Ezekiel 8:6, 15, 17), for God could not bear to leave His holy place. Even though the house of Israel was

rebellious, God still deeply loved His people from afar (see Ezekiel 11:23). Today, spiritual Jerusalem, the True Church belonging to God, also faces the impact of idolatry. Dear brothers and sisters, do you see it?

“Therefore, confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another so that you may be healed. A prayer of a righteous person, when it is brought about, can accomplish much.” (James 5:16 NASB2020)
