The Glory of the LORD Departed (Ezekiel 10)

September 2, 2026

“Then the glory of the LORD rose from the cherub to the threshold of the temple, and the temple was filled with the cloud, and the courtyard was filled with the brightness of the glory of the LORD... Then the glory of the LORD departed from the threshold of the temple and stood over the cherubim. When the cherubim departed, they lifted their wings and rose up from the earth in my sight with the wheels beside them; and they stood still at the entrance of the east gate of the LORD’s house, and the glory of the God of Israel was over them.” (Ezekiel 10:4, 18–19 NASB2020)

Ezekiel chapters 8 through 11 describe the glory of God departing from the temple. The glory of the LORD first stayed at the north gate (Ezekiel 8:3–4), then moved to the threshold (Ezekiel 9:3), next to the south side of the temple (Ezekiel 10:3–4), then to the east gate (Ezekiel 10:18–19, 11:1), and finally to the mountain on the east side of the city (Ezekiel 11:23).

God's Reluctance to Leave (Ezekiel 10:4)

Was God truly willing to leave the temple? He rose from above the cherubim and hovered at the threshold, then moved to the south side, and then to the east gate—He was so reluctant to depart! It was like a parent reluctant to leave a child, looking back time and time again...

God's Waiting (Ezekiel 10:18)

Just as the Lord washed the feet of His disciples before He was betrayed, waiting and hoping that Judas, who would betray Him, would be willing to repent. Unfortunately, Judas remained hard-hearted and refused to repent, causing great heartbreak to the Lord.

God's Helplessness (Ezekiel 10:19)

At this point, the glory of the LORD rose from the entrance of the inner court to the east gate of the temple, indicating that God had forsaken the nation of Judah, helplessly giving them over to the hands of the evil ones.

The main reason Jerusalem was abandoned was that the people worshiped idols and profaned God. Today's church should take this as a warning and carefully guard against unseen idols forming among church menbers. For one cannot have two masters in his heart; valuing Mammon inevitably means despising the Lord. Let us resolve in the Lord to "get up early in the morning" to listen to the Heavenly Father's still, small voice, drawing near to the Lord daily through Bible reading and prayer, living a life set apart from this world.“More than that, I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them mere rubbish, so that I may gain Christ.” (Philippians 3:8 NASB2020)

“Say to them, ‘As I live!’ declares the Lord GOD, ‘I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather that the wicked turn from his way and live. Turn back, turn back from your evil ways! Why then should you die, house of Israel?’’(Ezekiel 33:11 ) Are we constantly sinning and making mistakes today, so that God's glory departs from us? God does not dwell with sin. If our Bible Reading is weak and our prayers are powerless, should we not be alert to whether we are departing further and further away from God?

“And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power. When He had made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high.” (Hebrews 1:3 NASB2020)
