A Witness for God (Job 2)
August 24, 2025
And the LORD said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, who fears God and turns away from evil? He still holds fast his integrity, although you incited me against him to destroy him without reason.” (Job 2:3, ESV)
God calls Job “my servant.” This shows that Job was recognized by God as belonging to Him. God challenges Satan to carefully observe Job’s life and see his unwavering loyalty. Therefore, the Lord again affirms Job’s blamelessness, uprightness, fear of God, and turning away from evil. Job stood as God’s witness. People could see that even when sudden disaster fell upon him, he continued to trust the Lord. Because Job had long walked closely with God, he would not easily let go of Him.
“But stretch out your hand and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will curse you to your face.” And the LORD said to Satan, “Behold, he is in your hand; only spare his life.” (Job 2:5–6, ESV)
Satan argued that Job had not yet faced the deepest blow—pain in his own body. For surely, Satan reasoned, if Job himself were struck, he would abandon God. Indeed, human beings often feel most keenly when suffering touches their own flesh. Yet God calls us to a higher love: to bear one another’s burdens, that the glory of Christ may be revealed.“Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.” (Galatians 6:2, ESV) This is not about comparison or calculation, but about mutual care—sharing in sorrow, joy, and love in the Lord. This is God’s command: that we love one another.
Satan was permitted to strike Job himself. Yet God clearly set the boundary: “only spare his life.” This teaches us that the authority over life remains in God’s hands alone. From beginning to end, life is governed by the one true God. Those who belong to Him are His treasured possession. Why then should we fear? His great love and sovereign power are pledged to all who believe in Him.
“I tell you, my friends, do not fear those who kill the body, and after tchat have nothing more that they can do. But I will warn you whom to fear: fear him who, after he has killed, has authority to cast into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him! Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? And not one of them is forgotten before God. Why, even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not; you are of more value than many sparrows.” (Luke 12:4–7, ESV)
To know this God is to know that we are redeemed by the blood of Christ, given eternal life, and kept within His household. Such grace is immeasurably great. As God’s children, we live under His unfailing love and care.
Then his wife said to him, “Do you still hold fast your integrity? Curse God and die.” But he said to her, “You speak as one of the foolish women would speak. Shall we receive good from God, and shall we not receive evil?” (Job 2:9–10a, ESV)
Job’s wife, standing beside him, had seen all these sudden disasters. In anguish, she spoke with passionate despair. Though she knew her husband’s devotion to God, in this trial her own faith faltered. Satan sought to exploit this moment to sow the thought of abandoning God. Yet Job loved his wife; he gently redirected her to consider God’s sovereign work and not allow the adversary to destroy their communion with the Lord.
“Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? As it is written, ‘For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.’ No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:35–39, ESV)
Job chose silence and reverence, waiting upon God’s work. Because he feared the Lord and would not act rashly, God prepared to make Job His witness, showing His power through Job’s endurance—so that all who saw and heard might find assurance and hope.
The love of Christ cannot be replaced or removed by anything. We must strive to remain in this love, knowing its fullness, which grants eternal life.
“Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. For by it the people of old received their commendation. By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible.” (Hebrews 11:1–3, ESV)
