Finding Salvation and Peace in God’s Discipline (Job 5)
8月27日, 2025
“but man is born to trouble as the sparks fly upward. As for me, I would seek God, and to God would I commit my cause.” (Job 5:7–8, ESV)
This chapter records the words of Eliphaz, one of Job’s three friends, who tried to encourage Job. His point of view was that Job’s suffering came from God’s discipline, but that God’s discipline would also bring salvation. Although Eliphaz misunderstood Job’s situation and wrongly assumed Job suffered because of sin, we can still reflect and learn from his words.
“For affliction does not come from the dust, nor does trouble sprout from the ground.” (Job 5:6, ESV)
On the journey of faith, life will not always be smooth. We may face suffering, setbacks, and even failure. These trials are not by chance, nor always the result of sin, but opportunities for our faith to be refined. God allows us to face troubles so that our lives may be purified, like gold tested in fire, until we become vessels fit for His use. Through trials, we learn to rely more on God and look for His mercy and comfort. Though suffering may cause people to lose faith, it is also a chance to turn back to God.
“Behold, blessed is the one whom God reproves; therefore despise not the discipline of the Almighty. For he wounds, but he binds up; he shatters, but his hands heal.” (Job 5:17–18, ESV)
God’s discipline is not to destroy us, but to build us up in love. He wants us to learn humility and bear the fruit of the Spirit, leading us back to the right path. As Hebrews 12 says, “For the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and punishes every son whom he receives.” If we accept His discipline, we will see His healing hand and feel His presence after the trial. His ways are higher than our ways, and His purposes are greater than what we can understand.
“Agree with God, and be at peace; thereby good will come to you.” (Job 22:21, ESV)
True peace is not found in ease or comfort, but in our relationship with God. We see that though Job was tested by much suffering, he did not forsake God or fall because of his trials. The peace God gave him was true peace—peace that cannot be taken away, no matter the place or the situation. Today, as God’s children with the Holy Spirit dwelling in us, we may face pressures, temptations, and conflicts in values. But if we stay close to God, pray often, and hold fast to this precious faith, we will continue to have His peace in our hearts. This chapter reminds us: In life we will surely face suffering, but if we look to God and accept His discipline, we will also experience His salvation and blessing.
May we never lose faith in trials, but instead learn to rely more on God. In this crooked generation, may we hold fast the true gospel, live a holy life by the help of the Holy Spirit, and gain firm peace and the hope of eternal life in God’s grace.
“No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.” (1 Cor. 10:13, ESV)
