The Love of the Bridegroom and the Bride (Song of Songs 2)
“My beloved is mine, and I am his; He pastures his flock among the lilies.” (Song of Songs 2:16)
The title Song of Songs is a literal translation, meaning “the greatest of songs.” In Hebrew, adjectives are not commonly used in the same way, so instead of saying “a very beautiful song,” it is expressed as “the song among songs.” Similarly, “the King of kings” refers to the highest King.
The essence of a song is often found in its chorus (refrain). A chorus usually has a simple and repetitive melody, making it easy to remember and sing repeatedly:“O daughters of Jerusalem, I adjure you by the gazelles or by the does of the field, that you do not arouse or awaken my love until she pleases.” (cf. Song of Songs 2:7; 3:5; 8:4) Gazelles and does share a common trait: they are sensitive and easily startled. If forced or awakened at the wrong time, love may flee like a startled deer. True love must come willingly; it is not forced, but grows naturally through mutual affection. This attitude is seen in a patient and steadfast beloved, which makes love all the more precious. Jacob served seven years for Rachel, yet because of his deep love for her, those years seemed to him like only a few days (cf. Genesis 29:20). Then Jacob went in to Rachel also, and indeed he loved Rachel more than Leah, and he served with Laban for another seven years (cf. Genesis 29:30).
There was once a testimony from a sister: her husband was not a believer. She often invited him to church, and he even received the precious Holy Spirit. However, whenever it came time for baptism, he would hesitate and delay. Over time, she grew impatient and even spoke with anger, questioning why his heart was so hardened. Later, after being guided by a preacher who cited this verse—“Do not arouse or awaken my love until she pleases”—she learned not to rush or pressure him. Likewise, when we share the gospel with our relatives and friends, we should maintain the same attitude. We must not disturb the peaceful waters by forcing things. For everything there is an appointed time, and there is a time for every event under heaven (cf. Ecclesiastes 3:1).
“I am the rose of Sharon, the lily of the valleys.” (Song of Songs 2:1)
In Song of Songs, the woman speaks with humility, saying, “I am only a flower of the valley.” Though we may think such flowers are beautiful, in Israel they were considered common wildflowers, easily trampled—much like the periwinkle flowers commonly seen throughout Taiwan. The beloved responds by saying that she is like a lily among thorns (cf. Song of Songs 2:2). Hearing this, she rejoices, for compared to thorns, a lily stands out as the most beautiful. In her joy, she sings: “He has brought me to his banquet hall, and his banner over me is love.” (Song of Songs 2:4)
“We love, because He first loved us.” (1 John 4:19)
