Those Written in the Book of Life Will Be Called Holy
(Isaiah 4)
April 26, 2026
"When the Lord has washed away the filth of the daughters of Zion and purged the bloodshed of Jerusalem from her midst, by the spirit of judgment and the spirit of burning, then it will come about that he who is left in Zion and remains in Jerusalem will be called holy—everyone who is recorded for life in Jerusalem." (Isaiah 4:3-4)
The six short verses of this chapter prophesy that the captive chosen people, after undergoing God’s righteous judgment and the discipline of purging sin, will be promised blessing and sanctification as a small remnant. At the same time, it foretells the hope of all nations returning to God in the last days. For us, since receiving grace to become the spiritual chosen people, we can only rely entirely on the Holy Spirit of truth in our lives. Through the testimony of the Holy Spirit and the constant accompaniment of grace, we move forward toward "pursuing holiness and being set apart." In this wondrous journey, according to God’s will, we will experience the toils of life. These momentary, light afflictions are bearable, but we must build a solid foundation on the True Way. Otherwise, it is hard to avoid complaining due to severe suffering, or causing a disruption in our faith because of a sudden outburst of carnal temper, disregarding the Lord’s loving redemption.
"Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth. Just as You sent Me into the world, I also sent them into the world. And for their sakes I sanctify Myself, so that they themselves also may be sanctified in truth." (John 17:17-19)
When the Lord Jesus interceded for His disciples before leaving the world, He mentioned that He "sanctified Himself" so that the disciples might also be sanctified by the truth. But how can a person become holy by relying solely on themselves? Certainly not! Therefore, after our loving Lord Jesus ascended to heaven, He sent the Helper, the Holy Spirit of truth, to help those He loves. Those who receive the Holy Spirit and frequently pray in the spirit to be filled with the Holy Spirit will be able to stay away from the temptation of sin. In handling matters and interacting with people, they will know to ask God for wisdom to find the right direction. Furthermore, those who pursue the fullness of the Holy Spirit will naturally be vigilant, self-reflective, and thirsty for holiness, willing to take root in the True Way and endure to the end with an understanding of God’s will when facing trials. Consequently, they will gradually grow in faith and love through every stage of life, glorifying the Lord's name in all things, so that others can see we belong to Christ and are recorded in the Book of Life.
"Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be kept complete, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ." (1 Thessalonians 5:23)
As for how to achieve being blameless before God and walking on the path of sanctification, it depends on when one realizes the essence of faith through a lifetime of discipline—whether the process from "living for the Lord" to "dying for the Lord" can be successful. May we aspire to the mindset of Paul, practicing the oneness of the Lord and ourselves. When we have finished the race, we will surely be able to meet the Lord in peace.
"Blessed and holy is the one who has a part in the first resurrection; over these the second death has no power, but they will be priests of God and of Christ and will reign with Him for a thousand years." (Revelation 20:6)
