Who Do You Truly Rely On? (Isaiah 22)

May 14, 2026

And you made a reservoir between the two walls for the waters of the old pool.

But you did not depend on Him who made it,

Nor did you take into consideration Him who planned it long ago. (Isa. 22:11, NASB2020)

This chapter concerns the burden of the Valley of Vision, a prophecy concerning Jerusalem. In the vision, the prophet saw Jerusalem in chaos—trampled down, broken through, filled with sorrow and slaughter. Facing crisis, the people were not without action. They inspected weapons, repaired the walls, and stored water in preparation for defense. Yet verse 11 reveals the core issue of the whole chapter: “But you did not depend on Him who made it, nor did pyou take into consideration Him who planned it long ago”, that is, they did not look to God.

At that time, when the people of Israel faced the attack of a strong enemy, they did not place God first in their hearts. They did not humbly look to Him for help, but instead relied on human strength and their own resources to resist the enemy. Even more ironically, in the midst of crisis, the people chose eating, drinking, and pleasure rather than turning back to seek God’s help. They had lost the attitude of faith they should have upheld. The burden concerning the Valley of Vision reminds us that the kingdom of Judah had fallen into a deep spiritual crisis.

As I read this chapter, I am led to reflect: after believing in the Lord, do I truly rely on “myself,” or on “God”?

Unless the Lord builds the house,

They who build it labor in vain;

Unless the Lord guards the city,

The watchman stays awake in vain. (Ps. 127:1, NASB2020)

After reading this chapter, I thought of this verse from Psalms. It often reminds me that all accomplishment depends on God. Without His presence and blessing, human effort may become meaningless. The fulfillment of things depends not only on hard work, but on whether God is with us. The heart of faith is recognizing that sovereignty belongs to God. Only with His presence do our efforts gain true value and lasting stability. Do we also often become busy solving problems, yet forget to come before God and seek His help, spiritual strength, and support? Proverbs 3:5–6 says:

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart

And do not lean on your own understanding.

In all your ways acknowledge Him,

And He will make your paths straight.”

We must continually seek God, His power, and His presence. In everything we do, we should depend on Him. He will guide us in the way we should go. We should not try to rely only on ourselves.

The Lord of armies declares: “On that day, the peg driven in a firm place will give way; it will even break off and fall, and the load hanging on it will be cut off, for the Lord has spoken.” (Isa. 22:25, NASB2020)

In the latter part of this chapter, Shebna and Eliakim form a striking contrast. From 2 Kings 18, we learn that when Sennacherib king of Assyria attacked Jerusalem, Shebna was a scribe, and together with Eliakim he negotiated with the Assyrian messengers. At that time, King Hezekiah trusted in God. He spread the letter from the Assyrian messengers before the Lord and prayed for His help. God heard Hezekiah’s prayer and personally delivered Jerusalem, defeating the Assyrian army in a single night.

Shebna failed to recognize that this victory came from God. He did not give glory to God, but became proud and arrogant, and thus was rejected by God. Later, God called Eliakim and placed the key of the house of David on his shoulder, making him a support for the people. Yet verse 25 reminds us that true stability in life does not depend on how much a person can carry, but on whether God Himself is sustaining us.

As we live in this world, the responsibilities and burdens upon us often leave us breathless. If God were not holding us up, we would already have been bent down and fallen. May God give us hearts that are always humble and gentle, able to recognize His lovingkindness and grace. May we understand that only by relying on the true God can our lives become truly secure, and only then can we walk steadily on the path of life. May our spiritual lives continue to grow and be renewed, living out lives that are glorious, living, and strong.

The Lord is my strength and my shield;

My heart trusts in Him, and I am helped;

Therefore my heart exults,

And with my song I shall thank Him. (Ps. 28:7, NASB2020)
