True Knowledge of Him (Jeremiah 16)
July 13, 2016
“Now when you tell this people all these words, they will say to you, ‘For what reason has the Lord declared all this great disaster against us? And what is our wrongdoing, or what is our sin which we have committed against the Lord our God?’”(Jeremiah 16:10)
In Jeremiah 16, the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah, foretelling that the people would face national destruction and captivity. God also rebuked them for idolatry and disobedience to His law, Finally, promised their return, emphasizing again the need to recognize the true God.
But what makes people feel ridiculous is, even in the face of God’s wrath, the people did not understand how they had sinned against Him (Jeremiah 16:10). They even acknowledged the Lord as their God, yet still worshiped idols. This disregard and contempt for God was fully known to Him, and thus He poured out disaster upon them.
The Lord declared:
“Therefore behold, days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when it will no longer be said, ‘As the Lord lives, who brought up the sons of Israel out of the land of Egypt,’ but, ‘As the Lord lives, who brought up the sons of Israel from the land of the north and from all the lands where He had banished them.’ For I will restore them to their own land which I gave to their fathers.”
(Jeremiah 16:14–15)
Although Judah was God’s chosen people, they turned to worship other gods, forgetting His deliverance from Egypt. They lost gratitude and fear, but God would cause them to know Him anew. Through captivity and return, He would make them recognize who truly rules over all. Punishment was given, yet a path of return remained, through Babylon’s hand, the people would place God back in their hearts.
The Lord said:
“So I will make them know—this time I will make them know My power and My might; and they will know that My name is the Lord.”(Jeremiah 16:21)
After all this, God’s requirement was simply that His people know His power and His name. Was this too much to ask? Why then did they fail?
“So I say this, and affirm in the Lord, that you are to no longer walk just as the Gentiles also walk, in the futility of their minds, being darkened in their understanding, excluded from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the hardness of their heart.”
(Ephesians 4:17–18)
Paul mentioned in the book of Ephesians that those
who were hardened in heart, ignorant, and isolated from God’s life. They followed the world and ceased to know the true God. We must reflect: are we also swayed by worldly currents, drifting with false teachings? Without read the Bible daily and practice spiritual cultivation, opening our ears each morning to God’s word, we would lose true knowledge of Him. Those who stray the Lord’s path must urgently return, lest they perish without hope of turning back.
“As for you, my son Solomon, know the God of your father, and serve Him wholeheartedly and with a willing mind; for the Lord searches all hearts, and understands every intent of the thoughts. If you seek Him, He will let you find Him; but if you abandon Him, He will reject you forever.”
(1 Chronicles 28:9)
