The Song of the Vineyard (Isaiah 5)
Let me sing now for my beloved
A song of my beloved about His vineyard.
My beloved had a vineyard on a fertile hill.
He dug it all around, cleared it of stones,
And planted it with the choicest vine.
And He built a tower in the middle of it,
And also carved out a wine vat in it;
Then He expected it to produce good grapes,
But it produced only worthless ones.
(Isaiah 5:1-2, NASB)
This chapter is used as a vineyard to symbolize God’s people. It points out their laziness and God’s judgment. Here it describes how God has placed the most beautiful vine on the fertile hill, and it is a grape vineyard, which indicates the Israelites. However these vineyards did not produce good grapes, but rather produced wild grapes. It hints that the Israelites did not have good acts despite God’s grace, and instead did what God did not like. God gave everyone chances, but can everyone grasp these opportunities to confess and repent, change the direction of our footsteps, keep away from evil, and do what pleases God?
The writer before college was a traditional religion believer along with friends and family. In this kind of environment, under the influence of the devil, saw many rituals and ceremonies, which caused helplessness, unease, and insecurity in life. Thank God for selecting me, I came to True Jesus Church, received baptism and the Holy Spirit, became a child of God, has spiritual peace and joy. In any circumstance I can rely on God, truly thank God.
For this reason the anger of the Lord has burned against His people,
And He has stretched out His hand against them and struck them.
And the mountains quaked, and their corpses alay like refuse in the middle of the streets.
Despite all this, His anger is not spent,
But His hand is still stretched out.
(Isaiah 5:25, NASB)
In this chapter, verse 8 to 11 mentioned “connecting houses to houses, and linking land with land” as well as “waking up early to pursue strong liquor”, showing that the Israelites had become obsessed with pursuing worldly pleasures. This gives us a reflection: we worship the One True God, today on earth maybe we have things to pursue, but it must never replace God’s status in our hearts, anything that can replace God in our hearts is an idol. We must be careful not to fall into such a snare, lest we become the wild grapes in God’s mouth!
As a microcosm of the Old Testament, Isaiah becomes clearer that human weakness and disobedience are the primary causes of being deceived by the devil. Even when humanity falls into extreme suffering, God reveals His Fatherly mercy, demonstrating His great grace of redemption to mankind, who were originally destined for destruction. Through the history of Israel, God's plan of redemption is revealed, and through the mercy implied in His judgments of the nations, it is seen that God is impartial, and He is the Savior of mankind; salvation is attainable simply through faith!
But the Lord of armies will be exalted in judgment, And the holy God will show Himself holy in righteousness. (Isaiah 5:16, NASB)
